Other Mindful Activities

Most, if not all, activities can be done mindfully. This involves keeping attention focussed on the present moment as far as possible, and allowing the many thoughts that arise to gently pass away without judging or getting caught up in them. It helps to focus on aspects of the experience as we do the activity, such as the flow of the pen, the crunch of an apple or the sound of a soap bubble popping. It can help to also notice what emotions and sensations we are experiencing and so on. As well as doing daily activities such as peeling vegetables, eating, and washing up mindfully, you may find it helpful to consider what other things you particularly enjoy doing.

Mindful colouring is especially popular as it allows for creative self-expression, and can be a particularly absorbing activity, less prone to distraction. It is also very accessible, only requiring pens and pre-printed paper, and can be adapted to suit people of all ages and abilities. Colouring books of all types are readily available, and you may also like to search online for the type of colouring resources you prefer – from animal and plant line drawings to mandalas.
